Rapper ResKp (from the French rescapé, meaning survivor) hails from Dakar, Senegal. He is known for his musical commentaries on the complex struggles of daily life in his country, combining local instrumentation and vocals with contemporary hip hop beats and socially conscious lyrics in French and his mother tongue, Wolof. With his newest album, Sarax, ResKp reclaims his place as a master lyricist and poet while pushing the boundaries of hip hop musicality in his country and internationally.
Rapper ResKp (from the French rescapé, meaning survivor) hails from Dakar, Senegal. He appeared on the local hip hop scene in 2003, when his song “La Lutte Continue (AIDS)” won him a place in the compilation, Tous se Rappons le SIDA (Let's Rap about AIDS). He was named Best New Artist in Senegal’s Hip Hop Awards the same year. Since then, he has appeared in national festivals, televised competitions, and hip hop awards ceremonies, including the 2010 World Festival of Black Arts in Dakar and the Saint Louise Jazz Festival.
His early career was marked by a string of successes, notably his participation in the Banlieue Rhythm Festival, his appearance on Festival Afrika Keur, selected through a vote on Senegalese public television station RTS, his third place win in the Represent competition, and his role as a guest star on television show Vibe Academy. He took second place in the 2004 Hip Hop Feeling Competition on 2STV, then embarking on a national tour before he even released his first album. He has been a featured artist on innumerable albums.
ResKp’s 2009 debut album, Dafa Jot - It’s Time (Optimistic Productions) combined local instrumentations and vocals with contemporary hip hop beats and socially conscious lyrics in French and Reskp’s mother tongue, Wolof, to create a touching musical commentary on daily life in Senegal. His single “Calcul Mental” off that album was nominated for hit of the year on Senegalese television station TFM.
Between albums, ResKp released a number of singles include “Souy Ballet” “Goumbe yuy Lambaatu” “Show Me,” “Wax Ko sa Waa Kogn”, “Walou,” and “Gueusseum”, and was invited to be a featured artist on innumerable songs, notably rapper Gaston’s 2011 track “Fly On,” which won best song of the year in the Galsen Hip Hop Awards in Dakar.
With his 2017 album Sarax (Wolof: an offering made before a journey) ResKp reclaimed his place in Senegalese hip hop. Here, ResKp revisits themes from his earlier album with newfound clarity, maintaining the loyalty to his origins in the banlieue of Dakar that characterized his previous work while expanding outwards to address national and international issues.
